Two of Australia’s biggest basketball stars joined Cut to the Jase for the final episode of the year, with Alanna Smith and Ezi Magbegor offering insight into life away from the court, the growth of women’s basketball, and what lies ahead as they prepare for the Unrivalled League in Miami.
Smith, the reigning co-WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, reflected on stepping into media during the WNBL offseason, describing commentary as a “side quest” that proved far more challenging than expected. She spoke candidly about the pressure of live broadcasting and the constant mental load of being “on” throughout an entire game, acknowledging the skill required to balance analysis while receiving instructions in real time.
Magbegor, meanwhile, described the offseason as a rare opportunity to reset. After years of playing year-round, the Opals centre said the break allowed her to spend time with family, focus on strength work, and explore interests away from basketball. Alongside Smith, she has also used the time at home to build visibility for Australian WNBA players, attending events and representing the Opals in public settings.
Both players spoke strongly about the evolution of the WNBL, pointing to increased investment, improved visibility, and better resourcing as critical steps forward. Smith said Australian women’s basketball has long been world-class and is finally being represented that way, while Magbegor highlighted the importance of professional standards and player support.
Looking ahead, the pair are set to compete in the player-driven Unrivalled League, a 10-week, full-court three-on-three competition based in Miami. Both described the league as a genuine alternative to overseas seasons, offering elite competition, strong coaching, and a player-first environment.
With free agency looming and Australian basketball continuing to rise, Smith and Magbegor closed the year as clear symbols of both the present and future of the women’s game.
