Basketball at LA28 to start early

FIBA confirms revised Olympic schedule, with games starting two days before Opening Ceremony.

Basketball's governing body, FIBA, has confirmed updates to the basketball tournament schedule for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Games will begin two days prior to the Opening Ceremony, allowing the quarter-finals to be spread across two days.
No matches will start earlier than 12.00pm local time (5.00am AEST), ensuring improved conditions for players and greater flexibility for fans and broadcasters.
All games at the tournament will be played at the Intuit Dome, home of the NBA's LA Clippers.
The Boomers will be looking for retribution in Los Angeles after a heartbreaking loss in overtime at Paris' 2024 Olympics to Serbia, 95-90, in the quarter finals, while the Opals will look to continue their medal-winning performances, having claimed bronze in Paris.
FIBA Continental Cups
A host of men's continental cups are taking place around the globe, as the FIBA Asia Cup recently concluding in Saudi Arabia with Australia winning the title for the third time.
The FIBA AfroBasket 2025 is currently being held in Angola and will conclude on 24 August. The FIBA AmeriCup 2025 begins in Nicaragua on 21 August, followed by FIBA EuroBasket 2025 on 27 August across four host cities: Limassol (Cyprus), Tampere (Finland), Katowice (Poland) and Riga (Latvia), with the final phase held in Riga.
FIBA Basketball World Cups – 2026 and 2027
FIBA already released updates on preparations for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 in Germany and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Qatar.
The Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments will take place in March 2026, with hosts to be announced in September.
Twenty-four teams have now secured qualification, including Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and the Philippines via the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2025.
Other qualifiers include Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and South Sudan (AfroBasket), Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the USA (AmeriCup), and Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and Türkiye (EuroBasket). Germany qualifies automatically as host, with Czechia and Hungary joining via pre-qualifiers.
FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2025
Preparations are underway for the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2025, to be staged in Singapore from 18–21 September. Six continental champions will take part: Spain’s Unicaja, Brazil’s Flamengo, Japan’s Utsunomiya Brex, Australia’s NBL champions Illawarra Hawks, Libya’s Alahli SC, and NBA G League United.
