Aussies Bibby, Green, Zikarsky have new $6.3B boss
Marc Stad buys control of the Lynx and Timberwolves, and three Australians are on the two rosters
- Marc Stad buys control of the Lynx and Timberwolves at a $4.5b valuation
- Chloe Bibby, Josh Green and Rocco Zikarsky are on the two rosters
- The deal still needs NBA Board of Governors approval on September 15-16
Australian basketball stars Chloe Bibby, Josh Green and Rocco Zikarsky have a new boss.
American businessman Marc Stad has bought the majority of co-owner Marc Lore's stake to become controlling owner and largest shareholder of both the Minnesota Lynx and Minnesota Timberwolves for USD $4.5 billion (AUD $6.3B)
Lore keeps a minority holding and steps back to focus on the public listing of his food-tech company, the Wonder Group.
Australian Opals wing Bibby, 28, has been at three WNBA organisations this season. She played a preseason game for the Portland Fire on May 3, then four regular-season games for the Chicago Sky in July before signing with the Lynx.
The Lynx are 30-7 and top of the Western Conference, and Cheryl Reeve's side are chasing a championship right now.
The men have longer to wait.
Australian Boomers bronze medallist Green, 25, and Zikarsky, 20, are both on the Timberwolves roster, Green on a starter's contract worth just under USD $14.7 million this season and Zikarsky, the 7-foot-3 Queenslander, on a two-way.
The Timberwolves don't tip off their 2026-27 season until October.
Former professional baseballer Alex Rodriguez increases his equity and stays on as alternate governor of the Timberwolves and governor of the Lynx. Stad's wife Elisa becomes the Timberwolves governor.
Stad was already a significant minority investor in both clubs, he founded the Dragoneer Investment Group in 2012 and now runs more than USD $35 billion, and he bought into the NHL's Seattle Kraken as a minority shareholder in 2018.
Nothing changes for the three Australians on the floor.
Chris Finch stays as Timberwolves coach with Tim Connelly as president and Matt Lloyd as general manager, and Reeve stays at the Lynx as coach and president of basketball operations.
The deal is signed but still needs approval from the NBA Board of Governors, whose next meeting is on September 15 and 16.
Lore and Rodriguez bought into the Timberwolves in 2021 at a $1.5 billion valuation and took full control in June 2025, so the club has tripled in value in five years.
Even at $4.5 billion it is only the fourth-largest sale in NBA history.
The Boston Celtics went for $6.1 billion in 2024, and the two Los Angeles Lakers sales of the past year valued that club at $12.5 billion and $10 billion.
Minnesota has made the playoffs in each of the five seasons since Lore and Rodriguez bought in, reaching the conference finals in 2024 and 2025 before going out in the semi-finals this year.
This offseason they traded for Charlotte's LaMelo Ball to pair him with Anthony Edwards.
