Australian rookie point guard Tyrese Proctor has been pushed deeper into the Cleveland Cavaliers depth chart after the Eastern Conference contender made a blockbuster trade for former NBA MVP, 11-time All-Star James Harden and well-travelled Dennis Schroder.
Proctor, 21, is now behind Harden, Schroder, Craig Porter Jr., and Lonzo Ball but the Cavs may make more moves before the trade deadline on February 6, 2026 which may lead to Proctor moving back up in the depth chart.
The Cavaliers traded De'Andre Hunter to the Sacramento Kings for Dennis Schroder and Keon Ellis while the Los Angeles Clippers traded Harden to Cavaliers for Darius Garland and a second round draft pick. It forced the Cavaliers to waive Australian two-way player Luke Travers.
Harden, 36, is averaging 25.4 points and 8.1 assists per game in 44 games in 2024-25.
The trade rumour mill has Lonzo Ball potentially heading to his brother LaMelo's Charlotte Hornets and Schroder, now the Cavs have Harden, to Orlando.
Australian centre Jock Landale finally got his opportunity in Memphis and was making the most of it but was part of an eight-player trade between the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz. Landale, 29, was the victim of a Memphis rebuild on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 that sent former Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson, as the centrepiece to the Jazz.
What the Australian Boomers' Olympic Games bronze medallist's role at the Jazz will be remains unclear.
Fellow Boomers centre Duop Reath was traded to Dyson Daniels' Atlanta Hawks just two after being shutdown for the season because of foot surgery.
Atlanta traded guard Vit Krejci to the Blazers for Reath and two future second-round picks while the Portland gave back a 2027 Atlanta second round pick as well as a second round pick in 2030 that came from the New York Knicks.
tl;dr: Australian guards and bigs were heavily impacted by deadline chaos, with most now facing short-term uncertainty around role and minutes.
Mid-season Update: Australians in the NBA in 2025-26
Alex Toohey: 21-year-old forward signed a two-way NBA & G-League contract with the Golden State Warriors after he was drafted in 2025 but the former NBL Next Star was waived on December 9, 2025, after suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Dante Exum: 30-year-old wing returned to the NBA in 2023 after two seasons in Europe but his career has been crushed by injuries. His 2025-26 season was put on ice on November 21, 2025 by "complications" from a procedure on his right knee during the offseason.
Duop Reath: The 28-year-old South Sudan–born centre re-signed with the Portland Trail Blazers but he was shutdown for the season after season-ending foot surgery on January 30, 2026 and just days later traded to the Atlanta Hawks on February 2, 2026.

Irving is still recovering from an ACL injury and is expected back in 2026.
